Beginning at ETH Denver, March was a month of building products and relationships. It concluded with the release of the first testable demo of off-chain consensus, ready to disrupt oracles and data in web3.

Public Release of Alpha 2
Long-awaited, Alpha 2 was made accessible to thousands of testers who have already completed over 300,000 transactions in the past 5 days. It takes the form of a roulette wheel which is provably random—in fact, it is the first verifiably fair online casino game.
But Ontropy’s largest release is not interesting because of what it does, but because it is the proof of concept that off-chain consensus is cheap and secure, that it is even possible.
The front end is incredibly simple, almost underwhelming. This is by design, and proves how cryptographic complexity does not ruin user experience. Instead, users are able to place chips and bet while rarely interacting with Metamask or the blockchain. The experience is completely abstracted—the goal is security without friction, like the HTTPS lockbox at the top left of your screen.
On the backend, however, users are creating and sharing complicated proofs that produce a fault-tolerant and trustless system. This involves generating a distributed key generation field, passing ZK proofs through it, and applying a homomorphic encryption scheme to the results. This allows the users to reach finality off-chain. Only a small portion of this proof needs to be committed on-chain to exchange funds.
This off-chain consensus mechanism, Proof of Result, which is on full display in Alpha 2, is the same that will reduce web3’s dependence on oracles and introduce the concept of user-validated data. Learn more about off-chain consensus in our landmark piece on the matter.
We encourage you to check out Alpha 2 here, which is playable now with a MATIC wallet on desktop! Follow along with off-chain consensus by right-clicking to open inspect and console.

Alpha 3
Ontropy has an existing waitlist of games, casinos, and security protocols ready to use the verifiably random function (VRF) at launch. This month, we secured deals to be the exclusive on-chain partners with two large platforms. These games will introduce Ontropy’s technology to the world and serve as the first market use cases and flagships of Proof of Result.
Proof of Result, as a client and minimal SDK, will be accessible as web3’s first verifiably fair source of randomness as Ontropy’s Alpha 3. Unlike previous releases, Alpha 3 will be a commercial product at scale.
The speed of production and support of the Ontropy community allows this to be the final alpha release. While there were previously two more releases planned, Ontropy will now directly enter beta following the support of partners and ability to scale!
